By the way, locate message (with no wildcards, and hence no quotes) is enough. If you want, you can make a file (several files) visible or invisible again. The proper way to call locate is (with quotes) locate 'message'. However, I prefer not to display hidden system files via the terminal, but rather with a shortcut. defaults write AppleShowAllFiles 1 & killall Finder Type killall Finder and press Enter Type defaults.
